Tenth
Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge
The Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge is a unique contest - held on 160 meters - which occurs near the solstice in December. This contest uses grid squares for the exchange and a QSO point system which awards points in proportion to the distance between the stations making the QSO. There is also a generous power multipler (x2 for 100 watts and x4 for 5 watts) and a multi-operator category. There is even a multiplier for those who work QRP stations (x4) - making it worth the extra effort to pull them out of the noise.

Awards include "neat-o" plaques (thanks W7EW) which we solicit sponsors for. We also send out some certificates to the deserving (thanks K1PX).

MORE INFO

 1. Contest period:

1500 UTC December 17th to 1500 UTC December 18th, 2005

Operate for a maximum of 14 hours.

 2. Bands and mode:

160 meters CW only.

 3. Categories:

Single operator or Multi-operator.

Remote or packet spotting shall not be used.

Transmitting and receiving antennas shall be located at the same QTH.

 4. Exchange:

Four character grid square (i.e. CN85).

 5. QSO Points:

The number of QSO points for each contact depends on the distance between the two stations. This is computed by taking the distance between the centers of the two grid squares.

Count a minimum of one point per QSO and an additional point for every 500 kilometers distance. For example, a QSO with a station 1750 kilometers away will count for 4 QSO points. No additional distance for long path is allowed.

Do not worry if your logging software does not compute the QSO points. Our automated log checking software does this.

We are expanding the QRP bonus that applies when you work a QRP station. QRP stations are now worth ×4 points in your log. We must receive the log from the QRP station in order to give you credit. This is done automatically during the log checking process.

 6. Score:

Final score equals the total number of QSO points. There is no multiplier for different grids worked.

  • Stations running 5 to 100 watts output
    multiply their score by 2.

  • Stations running less than 5 watts
    multiply their score by 4.

Scores will be grouped by category.

Your log can be sent via the internet to:
