Here are the results for the 2001 Spring EU Sprint CW contest which took place in April for the first time this year. The move was a due to a decision to free the date for the Dayton Hamvention and also give a better chance for West European participants who - in May - usually faced very late sunset and so did not really have a chance on 80 meters (not sure if they have a chance now).
140 different stations were active in this contest from which 82 sent a log. That is a slight decrease of activity over last year, when we had 153 stations. However, in the previous year we had only 62 logs - so the percentage of log submissions went up at the same time!
Only 2 logs were hand written logs this time, 3 were printed computer logs, 0 came on a diskette, 0 via packet radio and the rest, 77 logs, came in by E-mail and were automatically confirmed by the EU sprint log robot.
10159 QSOs were checked, from which 8638 could be directly cross-checked in the logs, 1251 were checked by majority decision and log tracing and only 74 true unique calls remained - a relatively high number due to the YU Contest going on at the same time.
481 QSOs were found to be invalid due to errors on one or both sides. The net amount of valid QSOs is 9678. The average error rate over all entrants was 4.7%, however, two entrants above the 100 QSO mark had 0% errors (GM3POI at 176 QSOs, DL2ZAV at 127 QSOs). The highest error rates were around 25% this time. Out of 100% QSOs, 23% were made on 80 meters, 35% on 40 meters and 42% on 20 meters.
Let’s take a look at the strategy of perennial winner DL5AXX: Ulf was on 20 m single band from 1500-1613. Between 1616 and 1727 he was both on 20 and 40 meters, obviously using 2 radios. After 1754 he moved the 20 m radio to 80 meters and now continued on both 40 and 80.

The numbers are based on raw logs. So you see, to win this contest you seem to need two radios.
